Team USA warmed up for its T20 showdown with Canada on Saturday with a spine-tingling come from behind win over Argentina in their opening game of the ICC Americas T20 competition on Friday evening. Asked to bat first, Argentina rattled up an imposing 183 for 6 in 20 overs thanks to three key partnerships of 46, 36 and 63 for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th wickets respectively. Grant Dugmore top scored with 68 from 35 balls including six fours and five sixes. Tomas Francis got 35 from 24 (2x4; 3x6) and Donald Forrester, 32 from 17 (2x4; 3x6). Bowling for USA, Steve Massiah had 2 for 34 from his four overs and Mohammad Ghous 2 for 39 from his four. Lennox Cush and Moazzam Imtiaz took one wicket each.
Team USA made a brisk start to the chase posting 24 in 3 overs before Carl Wright fell for 17 from 9 balls (2x4 and 1x6). USA continued to maintain a healthy run rate despite losing Steve Massiah for a second-ball duck and Lennox Cush for 15 (3x4). Opener Sushil Nadkarni was the fourth wicket to fall after a blistering 42 from 23 balls (4x4 and 3x6). At that stage, USA were 82 for 4 off 9 and on course for victory when three wickets fell in the 11th over - Ashhar Medhi 10, Aditya Thyagarajan 6, and Rashard Marshall 1 - to leave Team USA tottering at 104 for 7, with 80 still needed from 9 overs, and only three wickets intact.
But Orlando Baker, 28 from 31 (2x4 and 1x6) and Timroy Allen, 32 from 21 (1x4 and 2x6) posted an 8th wicket, and ultimately, match-winning partnership of 69 in 7 overs. With 11 needed, Allen fell lbw but Moazzam Imtiaz struck two fours to see USA home by two wickets.
Having failed to successfully defend its title in the 50 over format, Team USA will be looking to make amends when it meets Canada on Saturday in another chapter of the great American cricket rivalry. Stay tuned!
